A partir do final do século passado e ao longo das primeiras décadas do presente, as preocupações acerca do futuro têm vindo a intensificar-se, fundadas nas implicações ambientais e sociopolíticas da ação humana. Este painel propõe analisar e discutir os modos como o futuro é construído no presente.

A partir do final do século passado e ao longo das primeiras décadas do presente, as preocupações acerca do futuro têm vindo a intensificar-se, fundadas nas implicações ambientais e sociopolíticas da ação humana. Atenta a esta realidade, a antropologia passou a incluir a necessidade de investigar os processos de construção dos futuros na sua agenda de investigação. Categorias como a antecipação, a expetativa, a especulação, a potencialidade, a esperança, o desejo, o imaginário e o destino começaram a enquadrar teoricamente uma antropologia do futuro. Analisar e discutir o futuro como facto cultural, na expressão de Arjun Appadurai, é a proposta do presente painel.
Convidam-se os investigadores a apresentarem propostas que investiguem, as seguintes questões, a título indicativo: Que futuros são desenhados e construídos no presente e em que áreas da vida social? Quais os agentes envolvidos? Quais os recursos que usam (e.g. novas tecnologias, biociências, etc.)? Quais as políticas que promovem esses processos de construção? Como é que poderemos estudar algo que ainda não existe? Como é que poderemos compreender a relação do ainda-não com as práticas do quotidiano presente? Quais as teorias e os conceitos que poderemos reunir para sustentar uma metodologia para estudar o futuro no presente?

From the end of the last century and throughout the first decades of the present, concerns about the future have been intensifying, based on the environmental and socio-political implications of human action. This panel proposes to analyse and discuss the ways in which the future is constructed in the present.

From the end of the last century and throughout the first decades of the present, concerns about the future have been intensifying, based on the environmental and socio-political implications of human action. Aware of this reality, anthropologists began to include the need to investigate the processes of construction of futures in their research agenda. Categories such as anticipation, expectation, speculation, potentiality, hope, desire, imaginary, and destiny began to theoretically frame an anthropology of the future. Analysing, and discussing the future as a cultural fact, in Arjun Appadurai’s expression, is the purpose of this panel.
Researchers are invited to submit proposals that investigate, for guidance purposes only, the following questions: What futures are designed and built in the present and in which areas of social life? Which agents are involved? What resources do they use (e.g., new technologies, biosciences, etc.)? What policies promote these construction processes? How can we study something that does not yet exist? How can we understand the relationship between the not-yet with present day-to-day practices? What theories and concepts can we gather to support a methodology to study the future in the present?
