EXPER and glocalized heritage

This round table focuses on the links between cultural imaginaries and the glocal uses of both historical and religious sites: understanding EXPERiences, exploiting and developing EXPERtises. Our comparative analysis will reflect on the representations, experiences and multiscalar appropriations to which such sites are subject to.

Resumo longo / Long abstract:
This round table, using the know-how of the EXPER project, focuses on the links between cultural imaginaries and the glocal uses of both historical and religious sites: understanding EXPERiences, exploiting and developing EXPERtises. Our will starting point for the debate will be the examples of three sites inscribed on the World Heritage List: “Paris, banks of the Seine” (including Notre-Dame de Paris), the “cultural landscape of Sintra” and the site of Westminster (including Westminster Abbey) in London. Other examples and theoretical perspectives will be added by the speakers. Our comparative analysis will reflect on the representations, experiences and multiscalar appropriations to which these sites are subject to. The aim is both to shed light on the fundamental role of historical and religious sites in the formation of multiscalar identities and to explore their effects. These sites generate powerful imaginations, forming, in the eyes of spiritual, tourist, scholarly or civic communities, glocal spaces for sharing meanings and values, but also divergent appropriation regimes and conflicts of uses. The second topic for discussion will thus be the conflicts between various management regimes to which such sites are subjected, either coming from UNESCO or from local management and local associations.

Esta mesa redonda centra-se nas ligações entre os imaginários culturais e os usos glocais de locais históricos e religiosos: compreendendo EXPERIÊNCIAS, explorando e desenvolvendo EXPERTISES. A análise comparativa reflectirá sobre as representações, experiências e apropriações diversas a que estes locais estão sujeitos.

Esta mesa redonda, utilizando o know-how do projeto EXPER, centra-se nas ligações entre os imaginários culturais e os usos glocais de sítios históricos e religiosos: compreender EXPERiências, explorar e desenvolver EXPERtises. O nosso ponto de partida para o debate serão os exemplos de três sítios inscritos na Lista do Património Mundial: “Paris, margens do Sena” (incluindo Notre-Dame de Paris), a “paisagem cultural de Sintra” e o sítio de Westminster (incluindo a Abadia de Westminster) em Londres. Outros exemplos e perspectivas teóricas serão acrescentados pelos palestrantes. A análise comparativa refletirá sobre as representações, experiências e apropriações multiescalares a que esses locais estão sujeitos. O objetivo é esclarecer o papel fundamental dos sítios históricos e religiosos na formação de identidades com esclas múltiplas e explorar os seus efeitos. Esses locais geram imaginações poderosas, formando, aos olhos de comunidades espirituais, turísticas, académicas ou cívicas, espaços glocais de compartilhamento de significados e valores, mas também regimes de apropriação divergentes de uso. O segundo tema de discussão será, assim, os conflitos entre os vários regimes de gestão a que tais sítios estão sujeitos, quer oriundos da UNESCO, quer da gestão local e associações locais.
